Struggle ...

Sacco's last letter to his son, Dante.

If nothing happens, they will electrocute us right after midnight.
Therefore here I am right with you, with love and with open heart, as I was yesterday.

Don't cry, Dante, for many, many tears have been wasted,
As your mother's tears have been already wasted for seven years,
And never did any good.
So, son, instead of crying, be strong, be brave,
So as to be able to comfort your mother.

And when you want to distract her from the discouraging soulness,
You take her for a long walk in the quiet countryside,
Gathering flowers here and there
And resting under the shade of trees, beside the music of the waters.
The peacefulness of nature, she will enjoy it very much,
And you will surely, too.
But, son, you must remember: Don't use all yourself,
But down yourself, just one step,
To help the weak ones at your side.

The weaker ones that cry for help, the persecuted and the victim,
They are your friends, friends of yours and mine.
They are the comrades that fight -- yes, and sometimes fall
Just as your father, your father and Bartolo, have fallen,
Have fought and fell, yesterday, for the conquest of joy,
Of freedom for all.
In the struggle of life you'll find, you'll find more love,
And in the struggle, you will be loved also.

아들 단테에게 보내는 사코의 마지막 편지

예정대로라면 자정이 지나서 바로 우리들은 전기의자에 앉게 될 것이다.
그래서 지금 여기에 너와 함께 있구나 어제와 같은 사랑과 진심어린 마음과 함께 말이다.

울지말거라 단테야, 그토록 많은 눈물은 소용없게 되었고 일곱해가 지나는 동안 흘린 엄마의 눈물도 이미 마찬가지였구나 그리고 모든 선의의 노력도 그렇구나.
그러니 아들아 울지 말고 강해지거라, 용감해지거라.
그래서 엄마에게 위로가 될 수 있도록 하거라.

엄마의 영혼이 지쳐가 용기를 잃어갈 때가 된다면,
엄마를 외진 시골 길로 데리고 가 같이 산책하며
여기저기 자라는 들꽃들을 따거라
그리고 나무 그늘 아래에서 쉬며 시냇물이 만든 음악을 감상하거라
자연의 평화로움에 엄마는 행복해 할 것이다.
그리고 너또한 같이 행복할 것이다.
그러나 아들아 이것만은 명심해라: 너를 위해 모든 것을 쓰거나
너를 위해 모든 것을 낭비하지 말거라 잠시 멈추서서
너의 곁에 있을 어떤 약한이를 돕기를 바란다.

도움을 청하는 약한이들, 박해받아 고통받는 이들,
그들은 모두 너의 친구들이고 너와 나 누군가의 친구들이다.
그들은 같이 싸우는 동지들이다. -- 그리고 떄로는 나처럼
실패할 수도 있고 나와 반제티같이 계속 쓰러져 왔지만
다시 싸우고 실패해왔다, 지금까지, 승리의 기쁨을 위해서
모든이들의 자유를 위해서

너가 만나게 될 인생의 투쟁 속에서, 넌 더 많은 사랑을을 알게 되고
