Bows and arrows ...

Your children are not your children.

They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.

They come through you but not from you,

And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts.

For they have their own thoughts.

You may house their bodies but not their souls,

For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow,

which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.

For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth.

The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.

Let your bending in the archer's hand be for gladness;

For even as he loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.

그대들의 아이라고 해서
아이들을 그대들 마음대로 다루어서는 안 된다.
아이들은 그대들을 통해서 이 세상에 왔을 뿐
그대들의 것은 아니다.
아이들과 함께 지내고 있지만
그대들은 아이들을 돌보는 관리자일 뿐
결코 소유자가 아니라는 점을 명심하라.

아이들은 신의 사랑이 충만한 삶을 갈구하는
신의 딸이요 아들인 것이다.
그러므로 아이들에게 무조건적인 사랑을 베풀어 준다고 해서
생각까지도 억지로 심어 주려고 해서는 안 된다.
아이들은 자신의 생각을 가진 살아 있는 인격체다.
아이들에게 육체의 집을 마련해 준다고 해서
영혼의 집까지 지어 주려고 하지 말라.
아이들의 영혼은 아이들 스스로가 짓고 있는 내일의 집에서
그대들이 결코 들어갈 수도 없는 꿈속에서조차 가 볼 수 없는
그들만의 집에서 살고 있다.
삶이란 과거로 되돌릴 수도 없으며 어제에 머무르지도 않는 것.
그대들이 현명하다면 아이들을 그대들과 똑같이 만들려 하지 말고
그대들 자신이 아이와 같게 되려고 노력해야 하리라.

그대들은 아이라는 살아 있는 화살을 날려 보내는 신의 활이다.
신은 진리와 자유가 충만한 이상향을 향하여 화살이 보다 빨리
그리고 보다 멀리 날아갈 수 있도록 온 힘을 기울여 그대들을 구부리고 있다.
신의 손이 그대들을 어루만지며 구부리고 있음을 기뻐하라.
그분은 날아가는 화살을 사랑하는 만큼이나
그 화살을 날려 보내는 활 또한 사랑하고 있으므로
